Saffron

The snow of the mountains, still

Bear the scarlet stains of your final act,

The crisp, solemn winter air of Pinglan, still

Stands a witness to the last moments of greatness.

Even on your human case crumbling,

The brilliance of your sacrifice

Shone through the valiant bullet wounds.

No matter the ages that trudge through,

The rousing drum of your strength,

Bravery amid paralysing pain,

Strength amid the chaos,

The sincerity of your offering,

Like that of the great Kunwar Singh,

Will echo in my heart for a lifetime.

Your willing welcome of the last second,

Pushes me to transcend the trivialities of life,

And readily sacrifice what man holds on to,

For a purpose greater than myself

Or anything that I call my own.

The unfathomable love and pride you nurtured

For the soil that we shared,

Stirs my soul to rise to the occasion,

And fight till the very end,

Even if it meant sacrificing myself.

As you arrived home, after months of separation

Wrapped in streaks of saffron and emerald,

Our hearts swelled with grateful respect,

For the selfless lionheart you were,

That I thank for every day,

That I aim to be one day.

  1. Reading it after Gen Bipin Rawat unfortunate demise...... Apart from the well known martyrs who laid down their lives in Kargil , Siachen etc , there are also officers from the coast guard ,territorial army and CRPF who have lost their lives during rescue opps and even during incident of riots. The saddest part is that many of these martyrs are not know to our public and few instances even criticized by various journalists when they are part of certain insurgency operations. Very well penned and realistic representation of what these heroes face . Keep writing Maanasa :) !

Thank you!

Throughout almost two years of Fledgling, you might have read about several people and places. This is my story. Since childhood, I have always been an ambitious child who yearned and burned with the passion to create an identity for myself. I was a sensitive child too, often bullied for my complexion. Though academic life was always a breeze, my social life has always struggled for stability and it still does. My conversations are rarely with people and my peers have always been in the form of a paper and pen. I needed something. My only comfort was music and literature. I delved deep into the literary universe and soon found myself intoxicated with the solace it gave me. Immersing myself in books and listening to other stories did help me take the weight off my mind, but these emotions, filled with inferiority, often overwhelmed my tiny brain and pushed them out in tears. It threatened to dangerously gnaw away at my confidence, which I could not afford to do at any cost. ...

Splendid Sisters! 👧👧

Hi guys! The person who embraced my successes and adversities, the one who always gave me a quick tickle and who made me realize the purpose of life is whom I want to share about today. Dear reader, if you are an elder brother/sister to a younger sister, you should consider reading this. Most elder siblings resent their younger sisters due to their drama-queen attitude. That does happen, a sister can be a brat sometimes. But, you know what? They can be heavenly blessings. They are cherubic sweet little angels, ready to bless your day and mine with a captivating smile (and no sister can be as sweet as mine, I bet!) who are ready to sacrifice anything for the defence of yours. Even if they have to take the second pick, they (almost) never protest. My sister is no less. She is classy, cool, carefree, hardworking, ideal and witty, the perfect figure of the today's independent modern woman's characteristics. She has an unbelievable ability - she can maintain size zero with...

Our last day at Kodaikanal

Good morning! It is Day 3! What's up? We are already preparing to leave the hotel. It is around 7:30 in the morning and we will be checking out within half an hour and embark on the last leg of our journey. I took one last stroll around the vertical garden, the room and my favorite spots. I was leaving with a heavy heart, I knew. This was our last day at this beautiful place and today will write my final memories in this place. And? We boarded the cab to spend our day seeing the last few attractions saved for the last of our trip. Our first spot was quite far away - about 35 kilometres away from our hotel. We were headed towards Poombarai, a beautiful hamlet in the outskirts of Kodaikanal. This wasn't just a spot - it was once home to the notorious Seevalaperi Pandi, a Tirunelveli goon who once was the king of headlines in the 1980s.  This hamlet had a lot in store for us - beautiful carrot and garlic plantations dotting the borders of the hills. The villages...
